| Two model kits are currently offered: the original McKenzie River double-ender, and the original McKenzie River double-ender with a transom. These are scaled (1" to the foot in scale) models of the first iterations as they first appeared in 1938 and 1948 respectively. The kit material is Mahogany and basswood and is milled to scale. 1" to the foot. Roger handcrafts oars for each model using a technique similar to that used by the original builders. He also fashions the stem and stern posts, the transom, and he bevels the chine log. Oarlocks and a glass stand are included. No special tools are required for the project. Most homes include most of the needed tools (e.g. clothes pins for clamps, sandpaper, X-acto knife, ruler and straight edge, etc). The instructions lead the modeler step by step through the process in a manner similar to the protocol used by the boat builder. The modeling technique is therefore a great teaching tool for the wannabe builder and is a great confidence builder is you are interested in building the boat full size. |
